De Jonghe’s strijkkwartet II (2020) is the second string quartet in a cycle of four. Unsure about what is to follow, the quartet searches its way through harsh and delicate harmonies, bursts and silences. Expressive gestures pass by, but a rhythmic element takes the upper hand and persists in a compulsive, unpredictable way. The fragments of the indecisive opening find themselves embedded in the changeful colours of the unyielding fast movement.
